A Newsmax TV panel took aim at former Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg Wednesday night, accusing him of being absent from his post while on the job and mocking his support for bike infrastructure.
During a panel discussion hosted by Chris Plante, guest Matthew Foldi, a former congressional candidate and conservative commentator, blasted Buttigieg’s tenure at the Department of Transportation.
Foldi also expressed his displeasure with bicycle lanes, which he called “communist garbage,” during a discussion about politics and infrastructure in New York.
“Pete Buttigieg, who was completely MIA — he vanished from the job of transportation secretary. No one noticed whatsoever,” Foldi said before making a plea to current DOT head Sean Duffy.
He continued, “By the way, I would beg Sean Duffy to also declare war on bike lanes. These are some of the most un-American, European, communist garbage.”
Panelist Hilary Fordwich, while referring to lanes for bicycle lanes, commented, “No one’s in them.”
When Politico reporter Daniel Lippman interjected to ask Foldi whether he bikes in Washington, DC, Foldi responded, “Absolutely not.”
Foldi added, “I have a car like a normal American.”
Fordwich added her own critique of biking conditions in the U.S.
“Can I actually say I lived in Amsterdam?” she said. “You know what it’s like? It’s the whole year round. It’s between 55 and 61. Here, it’s freezing cold in the winter, the sleet in the winter. It’s boiling hot and humid in the summer. The weather isn’t even conducive to it here.”
Foldi replied:
You know, what’s also not conducive to bike lanes? Bicyclists using them. We know that they don’t use them. But Pete Buttigieg was a completely MIA transportation secretary. Now he thinks because he grew a beard and goes on podcasts that he can be president. But he was such a disastrous failure, and now it’s nice to have someone who actually shows up.
Mercedes Schlapp added, “Get rid of the bus lanes, too.”
