The CBS News team covering the Papal Conclave picked an awkward time to roll out some youth slang when they declared that the cardinals electing a successor to Pope Francis will be “raw-dogging it” throughout the process.
88-year-old Pope Francis passed away almost two weeks ago, and on Wednesday, the process to select a new pope began in Vatican City with a procession at the Sistine Chapel, where the world will watch and wait for the smoke signal that a new pope has been chosen.
Live coverage of the event blanketed cable and broadcast news, including a CBS team led by Norah O’Donnell, Tony Dokoupil, Maurice DuBois, Seth Doane, and Chris Livesay with commentary from Vatican analyst Delia Gallagher, Father Anthony Figueiredo, and editor of Crux John Allen.
Things took a humorous turn when the team noted that, as depicted in the film Conclave, the cardinals will not have phones or other devices during the proceedings — but used the slang term “raw-dogging” to express it:
JOHN ALLEN: Most of them will tell you that while that’s going on, they’re sitting reading their breviary, that’s a book of prayers that clergy have, or praying a rosary, or doing, the one thing we know they’re not doing is checking Instagram because their devices have all been confiscated.
TONY DOKUPIL: I believe the kids call it raw-dogging it–.
(LAUGHTER).
TONY DOKUPIL: –if you’re gonna go through a long period of time with no electronic device.
DELIA GALLAGHER: Oh, right. Well, they’re of a certain age, so they might be used to it.
FATHER ANTHONY FIGUEIREDO: I just wanted to say, the cardinal we just saw come up with the black covering over his head is the cardinals from Melbourne, just 45 years old. The youngest. Incredible, the youngest. Imagine if he were elected pope.
